People Served by the SOS Program

SOS is designed for:

·
Family and close friends of people who have completed suicide.
·
For most, the suicide has occurred in the last six months, but it is open to all, no matter when the suicide occurred.
·
We offer structured, facilitated support groups, not therapy groups.
Some people confuse "survivor of suicide" with someone who has attempted suicide and now wants help. SOS does not provide services for those who have attempted suicide. We generally refer people who have attempted suicide and want to participate in support groups to groups that deal with issues that might contribute to suicidal thoughts, e.g., physical illness, depression, bipolar disorder, drug and alcohol issues, family violence, etc.

Available SOS Programs

SOS Support Groups:

·
Groups are "closed" -- the same participants meet together for eight weeks.
·
Groups meet once a week at the center or at other locations in the Metroplex.
·
Groups are co-facilitated by a clinical professional and a trained volunteer.
·
New groups start every month, with the exception of December.
·
Maximum membership in each group is about 15.
Phone Link:

·
The center has a group of volunteers who have lost a loved one to suicide, have attended our SOS groups, have come a long way in their own healing process, and have completed special training as Phone Link volunteers. They are available to provide support by telephone to new survivors who contact the center. All Phone Link volunteers are carefully matched to the individual requesting this service. For example, we will attempt to pair someone who recently lost a child with a volunteer who had the same loss.
